When I first had the idea of starting a home design blog, my immediate thought process went straight to coming up with the perfect name. I wanted it to be authentic and true to who I am and what I like, but also fun and creative (my college degree is in Communications – Advertising after all). It took weeks of brainstorming but once I landed on “Keeping it Teal” my enthusiasm and motivation to get this new journey up and running just took off!
Since at least high school, teal has been my favorite color. My eye is just naturally drawn to it. It captivates me and lifts my mood. It is my happy color. If something comes in teal, it will absolutely get a double take, even if it is something I don’t need or even want. Teal is my shopping weakness in the best possible way.
Over the years, my love of teal has luckily become a little more refined in my design style. Let’s just say, there was plenty of room for refinement. Teal sweatpants worn way too often, teal backpacks, and teal notebooks are all some of my first teal memories. Fast forward a bit and I convinced my parents to let me paint my childhood bedroom ALL teal when I moved back home from college. Not an accent wall – all four walls – bright, deep teal. It was a lot and I loved it so much. Continuing on, my bridesmaids wore gorgeous floor length teal dresses at my wedding. I’ve bought teal high heels, a teal storage cabinet (still have it and love it), teal throw pillows, teal picture frames, teal phone cases, and more teal clothing and home goods than I care to admit….I could go on and on and on…..
As I have designed and decorated home after home (currently in my 7th home since college), my style has definitely changed. Especially after having kids, I’ve become much more about minimalism and organization – clutter stresses me out and I notice an immediate spike in anxiety. I am now most drawn to calm and soothing colors – grays, whites, light blues and natural wood tones relax me. I still enjoy an amazing pop of color in a room – and teal is, of course, at the top of that color list – but I no longer dream of an ALL teal room. I do notice that I buy my 3 year old daughter a lot of teal clothes though….so I think the obsession is definitely still there, and may even continue to live on in the next generation. Teal really is a happy color.
